BUTTERFLY GARDENS & BIO-DIVERSITY CENTER
In 2003, a small group of citizens focused the youth of our community on a philosophy of community service that supported classroom education. The outcome of that effort evolved into the planning, design, and development of a 66-acre nature park and education facility. These visionary students sought to augment their school classroom with a real world laboratory for the study of:
physical and environmental sciences,
conservation techniques,
environmentally-friendly construction,
the bio-diversity of plant and animal life,
solar power,
geo-thermal energy,
rain water collection,
and gray water recycling.
This is amazing when you realize this was conceived, oralized, and promoted by students of our community. This page represents Phase 1 of the Bio-diversity Education Center envisioned by those students.
This goal is now within our grasp! Recognizing the potential of this facility---North Lake College, Coppell ISD, and the City of Coppell joined as active supporters of our non-profit foundation. As a result, this Friends of Coppell Nature Park partnership for mentoring youth has been praised by the National Service Learning Conference in Philadelphia; DFW's Channel 8 News and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission in Austin, Tx.
Hundreds of students have been involved in the effort with over 14,000 hours of volunteer work recorded. Here is a PowerPoint presentation.
